Ben Creaney

Ben Creaney’s work has been influenced by aspects of early childhood, vague emotions and cultural concerns; such as those exhibited in William B Yates’ poetry, especially the poem ‘The Second Coming’, with its hints of order, chaos, cycles and renewals.

Creaney spent his early years in Northern Ireland, when many legends and myths still held symbolic conviction. These elements also influence his work. It is a process of self-discovery.

Creaney sees the process of abstract art as the old argument, regarding the existence of free-will of pre determined fate. His work investigates this age-old question through conscious and unconscious forces. The role of opposites.

Creaney was one of the inaugural studio artists at 200 Gertrude Street. Creaney participated in the Gertrude Studio Program from 1985 to 1986. He taught art for a number of years, including a life drawing group for over a decade. He completed a Diploma of Fine Art at Prahran CAE in 1982, followed by a Fellowship at RMIT. He was studio assistant to Roger Kemp. He is represented in public and private collections.
