Jonathan Nichols

Jonathan Nichols is an artist and independent curator.

He began painting in the early 1990s, participating in the Gertrude Studio Program from 1993 to 1995. Early in his career, he also co-founded Melbourne artist-run galleries Stripp (1996–98), Lovers (1998–99 and 2014) and The Green Door (2005). In 2012 he initiated the online publishing project stamm.com.au. That same year, he undertook a year-long residency at Rimbun Dahan, Kuala Lumpur. He then lived in Singapore for six years. Nichols is now based between Naarm/Melbourne and Garramilla/Darwin. Recent solo exhibitions include The Inside of Painting, Castlemaine Art Museum (2024), The Inside of Painting, Yeo Workshop (2023) (Singapore) and Walking with Ghosts, VCA Artspace Gallery (2022). 

In 2026 Nichols curated Painting Itself/绘画本身, an exhibition of international contemporary painters presented at PICA as part of Perth Festival before travelling to the ANU Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra later that year. Other curated thematic exhibitions including Learning to Leave (VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, 2014), Mac (Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, 2009) and Feeling Machines (Stripp, 1997).

Nichols received a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2023. He is represented by Yeo Workshop, Singapore.
