Nicki Wynnychuk
2009 - 2010
Nicki Wynnychuk was born in Canada, grew up in New Zealand and has recently lived in France, Spain and is now currently living in Australia. Wynnychuk has a BFA from Canterbury University 1999, and a MVA (First Class Honours) from the VCA 2007. Wynnychuk’s practice is based on a recuperation and transformation of material with the intent to convert, translate and reassemble the objects into small monuments that have a freshness and precariousness so that the material is imbued with a new energy. Wynnychuk’s conceptual framework continues a sustained investigation into the possiblity of a sculptural translation of war theorist Herfried Munkler's concept of a post-heroic society. Recent work includes: a flag and a flagpole, WestSpace, Melbourne and HSP, Christchurch NZ, 2009; Goethe Puked Here (with Hamish Carr), The Narrows, Melbourne 2008; A Better Place (in collaboration with Simon Pericich), Long Island, Frankston, The Library Artspace, Don’t Come Gallery, George Patton Gallery Melbourne, Waikato Museum, Hamilton, NZ, et al, 2007-9; vertually neutral, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces 2008.
