Gertrude has supported great artists at pivotal moments in their careers since 1985
Gertrude’s artistic program positions artists and curators within a global contemporary art context. Gertrude performs a critical role in supporting artists to research and produce ambitious creative projects, and connect their projects with communities of creative practitioners and public audiences. Gertrude is Australia’s leading studio program for professional artists and contributes dynamic exhibitions, public programs, education offerings and publishing initiatives.
Gertrude is a site for both presentation and production of contemporary art. Gertrude alumni distinguish themselves in exhibitions and collections throughout Australia and internationally. Every artist representing Australia at the Venice Biennale since 1997 (with one exception) has been a Gertrude studio or exhibiting artist. Gertrude is a vital laboratory for the visual arts, supporting the expanding breadth of contemporary art, and defining the future and history of creativity in Victoria.
Over 300 artists have taken part in the Gertrude Studio Program since its inception. The program provides highly subsidised studios to 16 artists at a time for a two-year period. The Gertrude Studio Program supports an intergenerational selection of artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to make risk-taking and ambitious new works.
