In a community like Gertrude's, the impacts of a practitioner such as Cate introduces a legacy of thought, methodology and mentorship across new cohorts of artists. Cate was central to the Victorian College of the Arts and Monash University, and remained connected to the legacies of the Gertrude Studio Program beyond her own time in the studios (2002 – 2004).
\n
We encourage listening to or attending the forthcoming public program Art Forum: The art of Dr Cate Consandine (1970 – 2026) by Dr Kyla McFarlane – Thursday 20 August, 12.15pm, Federation Hall, Victorian College of the Arts, for a deepened engagement with her practice.
\n
–
\n
Cate Consandine created work across a wide range of formal and discursive mediums including sculpture and spatial practice, film and performance. Cate referred to the body as a material and source of research, of information. Her practice remained engaged with the physical expression of emotional and psychological states, centring on bodies and affect, and registers of thought, sensation and feeling, throughout her career.
\n
After her time at Gertrude, Cate would attend the openings and programs of students and graduates, who she frequently and sincerely championed. For this reason, and with the hope of respecting the meaningful artistic legacy of the artist, Gertrude wishes to reflect on Cate’s time in the Gertrude Studio Program, as a learning and experimental contemporary artist, during the early 2000s.
\n
Cate was in residence in Studio 14 at Gertrude Contemporary from 2002 until 2004, and during that time contributed to the annual Gertrude Studios exhibitions and to the Studio Selection Subcommittee process over several years.
","additionalContent":[{"id":"DatoCmsImage-YP-bwLcNSX-fZOIRhePqlQ-en","model":{"name":"Image"},"image":{"title":"Cate Consandine studio documentation at 200 Gertrude Street, Naarm Melbourne, c.2003. A thick musk of desire permeates the space of the gallery, pheromones linking the works, levelling the space into a landscape of pursuit. As Ugo Rondinone suggests: “it is a matter of not being able to distinguish between that, which we remember and that, which we long for”. Desire (for the exotic) is configured through the imprint of past experience; and the object of desire is reduced and controlled within this romanticising tendency. In Consandine’s work, however, the relationship between memory and longing is re-directed, even unleashed. Casting is a semi-mechanical sculptural process that elucidates exactly a memory of a form: it is an absolute absence, a perfect lack.'
"},{"id":"DatoCmsImage-bA2w4pK1T4eE9DI1pDpdDQ-en","model":{"name":"Image"},"image":{"title":"Cate Consandine, Candy Cane, installation view, 200 Gertrude Street, Naarm Melbourne, 2006, image courtesy and © the artist, photograph: Gertrude","alt":"Cate Consandine, Candy Cane, installation view, 200 Gertrude Street, Naarm Melbourne, 2006, image courtesy and © the artist, photograph: Gertrude","fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.2733446519524618,"src":"https://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format","srcSet":"https://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.12&w=1500 175w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.24&w=1500 350w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.47&w=1500 700w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.7&w=1500 1050w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.94&w=1500 1400w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006.jpg?auto=format&dpr=1&w=1500 1500w","sizes":"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px"}},"workCaption":""},{"id":"DatoCmsImage-aSt8fVSqSi-cJSQAi3uNPQ-en","model":{"name":"Image"},"image":{"title":"Cate Consandine, Candy Cane, installation view, 200 Gertrude Street, Naarm Melbourne, 2006, image courtesy and © the artist, photograph: Gertrude","alt":"Cate Consandine, Candy Cane, installation view, 200 Gertrude Street, Naarm Melbourne, 2006, image courtesy and © the artist, photograph: Gertrude","fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.4969574036511155,"src":"https://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006-3.jpg?auto=format","srcSet":"https://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006-3.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.24&w=738 175w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006-3.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.48&w=738 350w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006-3.jpg?auto=format&dpr=0.95&w=738 700w,\nhttps://www.datocms-assets.com/36179/1776920946-candy_cane_cate-consadine_gertrude_contemporary_2006-3.jpg?auto=format&dpr=1&w=738 738w","sizes":"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px"}},"workCaption":""},{"id":"DatoCmsText-FQCDYM-4Sd-2nhNwqN9cYQ-en","model":{"name":"Text"},"text":"
In the words of the artist, spoken in 2024 to an expanded virtual auditorium of students at the Victorian College of the Arts, the intent and methodology have remarkable consistency with those of the early 2000s.
\n
‘I think that I want to start talking from a position of sculpture.
