Gertrude is pleased to congratulate Sarah Contos as recipient of the 2027 Copyright Agency Partnerships (CAP) Grant Commission, to be presented at Edith Cowan University at the soon to open, purpose-built ECU Gallery.

ECU has announced Boorloo Perth-born artist Sarah Contos as the recipient of the 2027 CAP Grant Commission, recognising her dynamic contemporary practice, whimsical autobiographical narratives and intuitive connection to time and place.

Contos is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has built a national profile through exhibitions across Australia at significant institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of South Australia, amongst others.

She has been a finalist in multiple art prizes, notably winning the Ramsey Art Prize – one of Australia’s richest art prizes – in 2017, and was recently announced as a finalist in the Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.  In 2019, Contos was awarded a prestigious studio scholarship through the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Contos exhibited her first institutional solo exhibition in Naarm Melbourne in 2023, In the Belly of Mary Shelley at Gertrude Contemporary.

The new commissioned work will be developed for exhibition at the ECU Gallery from 12 February to 7 May 2027.

Copyright Agency Partnerships (CAP) is an annual series supporting major commissions for mid-career and established visual artists in partnership with leading art galleries and cultural organisations around Australia.

From 2025 to 2028, the Copyright Agency is partnering with UNSW Galleries, Sydney; ECU Gallery, Boorloo Perth; and Gertrude, Naarm Melbourne.

For the inaugural commission of the 2025 to 2028 series, UNSW Galleries will present Heather B. Swann: The Forests of Symbols from 4 September to 22 November 2026.

Applications for the 2028 opportunity at Gertrude Contemporary will open in 2027.
